The Health Initiatives Association (HIA) has been operating in Uganda since 2012 and has successfully contributed not only to improving health outcomes but also to enhancing the overall well-being of the local community. Over the years, the organisation has grown steadily, both in terms of infrastructure and the range of services it provides.
Together with our partners and the local community, we strive to identify neglected areas and genuine needs so that our assistance remains targeted, relevant, and contributes to sustainable development.
The mission of Health Initiatives Association (HIA) is to provide quality healthcare, promote education, and support other social services that contribute to the sustainable development of the local community.
HIA delivers a holistic approach to care, integrating medical, social, and spiritual support. This commitment to comprehensive care has proven to be highly effective in addressing the needs of individuals and families within the community.
In cooperation with St. Elizabeth University of Health and Social Work, HIA operates the St. John Paul II HIV Clinic and a General Outpatient Clinic. The HIV clinic currently provides care for approximately 700 active patients, while the general outpatient clinic treats around 1,200 patients each month.
Uganda ranks 24th in the world in terms of poverty levels. Approximately 41.3% of the population lives below the international poverty line (less than USD 2.15 per day). According to the most recent national census conducted in 2024, Uganda has nearly 46 million inhabitants, of whom 23 million are children under the age of 18.
The current HIV prevalence rate in Uganda is approximately 5.2%. However, in the Buikwe District, HIV prevalence among the adult population is close to 10%.
Two major factors contribute to this situation:
The widespread presence of prostitution along the highway connecting Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, which is heavily used by long-distance truck drivers.
The high prevalence of HIV in fishing communities and ports located along the shores of Lake Victoria.
In this region, we focus on areas that have historically received insufficient attention, including paediatric HIV care, mental health services, rehabilitation for children with disabilities, community awareness programmes, and education for marginalised groups.
HIA operates through three main departments: the Health Programme, the Social Programme, and the Administrative Department.
The Health Programme includes:
HIV Clinic
General Outpatient Clinic
Maternity Unit and Antenatal Care Services
Day Care Unit
Laboratory Services
Counselling Services
Rehabilitation Services for Children with Disabilities
Other Healthcare Activities
The Social Programme focuses on:
Home visits and household monitoring of patients
Educational support for children and young people
Support for small-scale entrepreneurship
Management of urgent social cases
The Administrative Department works to ensure the smooth operation and sustainable financing of the organisation.
