History

St. Vincent de Paul Shelter has been open every day since 2006. With a capacity of 200 beds (increasing to 220 during the winter months), the shelter provides overnight accommodation to any person over the age of 18 who has nowhere else to sleep.

The admission conditions are designed to ensure that the shelter remains accessible to everyone in need of its services, including individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The only requirement is that clients must not consume alcohol or other intoxicating substances on the shelter premises and must not endanger themselves, staff members, or other clients.

Overview

The Day Centre provides a safe and supportive environment for people experiencing homelessness and for those facing difficult life circumstances. It offers essential services and basic necessities, including overnight accommodation, meals, hygiene facilities, clothing, social counselling, and a welcoming space where individuals can find support, guidance, and encouragement.

Why We’re There

Our work is founded on the belief that every person has inherent dignity and deserves the opportunity to live a dignified life.

At the Day Centre, we therefore provide:

  • Basic necessities – hot meals, tea and coffee, access to showers, and hygiene facilities;
  • Rest and a safe environment – a place where people can find shelter from adverse weather conditions and regain their strength;
  • Professional support – social and psychological counselling to help individuals address their challenges and identify pathways out of difficult circumstances;
  • Guidance on the path back to independence – assistance with administrative matters, job searching, and reintegration into society.

Our services go beyond practical assistance. We strive to ensure that people come to us not only for food, clothing, or hygiene facilities, but also for the reassurance that they are valued, respected, and that someone genuinely cares about their well-being.

What We Do

The Day Centre operates on a low-threshold basis, meaning that support is available to anyone in need without complicated admission requirements, referrals, or administrative barriers.

Our doors are open to all individuals seeking assistance, acceptance, and a compassionate human approach. We believe that help should be accessible, respectful, and available at the moment it is needed most.
